From moss-draped oak trees to cobblestone streets, Beaufort, SC has an irresistible beauty turning its visitors into residents.
Beaufort is best known for its antebellum homes, historic district, and its always-refreshing seafood. During the summer season there are a handful of events each night including wine tastings, water festivals, fishing events, golf programs, visual arts programs, wildlife tours, and dance lessons.
It is the residents of Beaufort that help to maintain its deep-rooted history. TripAdvisor suggests traveling through the Historic District by foot, carriage, bike, or bus as opposed to car. This allows to fully take in the salt-water breeze and to view the century old mansions lining the streets of the Old Point neighborhood (Beaufort). The most highly encouraged tour guide companies are Beaufort Tours, Janet’s Walking Tours, Southurn Rose, or Spirit of Old Beaufort.
Other highly encouraged activities include touring the Old Sheldon Church Ruins, the Henry Chambers Waterfront Park, the John Mark Verdier House Museum, the Penn Center, the Hunting Island Lighthouse, and Parris Island where thousands of men and women are trained to become Marines.
Countless movies were filmed here, a few being The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides. That being said, these and other films brought world-renowned actors such as Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand, Demi Moore, Nick Nolte, and Bill Murray into town.
Beaufort is a collection of all who love and respect this holy city and with that, these visitors and residents constantly encourage local entrepreneurs. It would be a shame to visit without dipping your toes into food, beverage, and retail. Some well-known restaurants are MoonDoggies Café and Grill, Magnolia Bakery Café, Blackstone Café, Common Ground, Gullah Grub, and Lady’s Island Dockside.
Another way to know Beaufort is to educate yourself with its arts and literature. Stop by any of Beaufort’s art galleries or read written works to hear the voices of Beaufort’s finest. Nationally-recognized writer, Pat Conroy, grew up in the Lowcountry, attended the Citadel, and between the lines of his life events, dedicated much of his time writing about his experience on these waters. He is the author of fourteen books, a few being The Water is Wide, The Great Santini, and The Prince of Tides.
It is without a doubt that Beaufort’s residents love and respect one another and to fully recognize this town and its residents, spend your summer walking the shorelines, riding the bike trails, and all other pathways that encompass its historic grounds.
